Trump approves nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia, will the threat of nuclear weapons increase?

US President Donald Trump has approved a major civil nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia. According to the report of Wall Street Journal, under this agreement, Saudi Arabia may get permission to enrich uranium in its own country. This agreement is in the news because the countries with which the US had previously signed nuclear agreements included strict safety rules that ensured that nuclear technology was used only for power generation and peaceful purposes, and not for making nuclear weapons. But such important security provisions are not included in this agreement with Saudi Arabia.

Agreement signed for 30 years

According to the report, this agreement will be for 30 years and its price will be 10 billion dollars. Under this, American companies will play a major role in developing Saudi Arabia’s civil nuclear program. This will significantly reduce the possibility of companies from other countries working in this sector. According to Reuters, the Trump administration will present this agreement in the US Congress for approval in the next few days.

This agreement also includes 123 agreements. It has been signed by America’s Energy Minister Chris Wright and Saudi Arabia’s Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman. This agreement decides how America will conduct nuclear cooperation with any other country.

Saudi has talked about making nuclear weapons

Experts say that if Saudi Arabia enriches uranium at home and there is not strict international monitoring, then the risk of making nuclear weapons may increase in the future. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has already said that if Iran acquires nuclear weapons, then Saudi Arabia will also try to make its own nuclear weapons.

According to a recent report by CNN, in this agreement it will not be necessary for Saudi Arabia to adopt the additional protocol of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This protocol has been created for strict monitoring of nuclear activities around the world. According to the report, instead there will be a separate bilateral monitoring system between America and Saudi Arabia. For this reason, experts have expressed concern about this agreement that in the future it may have an impact on global nuclear security and efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons.
