Airtel’s new service is being investigated by the Center and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. Regarding the new service, the company says that it provides better network experience to postpaid customers. Officials are looking into whether it adheres to net neutrality rules and want to ensure that there is no degradation in the quality of service to prepaid customers due to giving priority to postpaid users.
What is the matter?
Communication Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has already held a meeting with officials on this service. The regulator will examine this service in detail and may ask the company to provide any technical details. People familiar with the matter told The Economic Times that Airtel may be asked to show how the network has been slicing so that the technology behind the new service can be better understood.
Airtel has recently announced a new service which the company claimed will provide postpaid users a better and more consistent network experience by taking advantage of the network slicing technology provided by the standalone 5G architecture, which the company is currently rolling out across India.
People associated with this development said that Airtel’s rigorous internal testing conducted over several weeks has shown that 5G slicing technology improves the overall network experience for all users, pre and postpaid. This priority service is targeting Airtel’s postpaid user base, which is about 7.75 percent of its 373 million mobile users in the country.
There are currently no specific rules regarding network slicing in India, although TRAI in September 2020 had recommended some Traffic Management Practices (TMPs) for telecom networks, which could be done within the net neutrality norms. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has not yet notified them.
