
Karnataka News: Eight people died and two others are missing after drowning in Thattehakalu river in Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada district. A total of 14 people who went to collect shells drowned in the water and eight died. The remaining four have been rescued, while the search for the two missing is ongoing. All the deceased were residents of the same family located in Padushirali, Shardahole. After the incident, a large number of people have gathered near the river and are praying to God that the remaining people return alive. The police has also reached the spot.
According to the information, all the people who went to collect shells were from Shirali of Bhatkal, and out of total 14 people, 8 members of the same family have died. The deceased have been identified as Lakshmi Madeva Nayak (38), Lakshmi Shivaram Nayak (39), Malathi Jattappa Nayak (38), Mastamma Manjunatha Nayak (43), Lakshmi Nayak, Lakshmi Annappa Nayak (44), Jyoti Nayak (37) and Umesh Manjunatha Nayak (42). All the deceased are said to be from the same family located in Padushirali, Shardahole.

Uttara Kannada District Commissioner Lakshmi Priya, reacting to the tragedy, said that information has been received that 14 people were killed and as per preliminary information, 8 people have died. NDRF personnel have been called to the spot. The local police is also conducting a search operation. He said that the water level will decrease by evening and we will intensify the search operation.
