Tobacco Effect on Sperm Health: Does chewing tobacco harm sperm? Learn from experts

June 17, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Do you know that like cigarettes, chewing tobacco also increases the risk of infertility in men. Most people do not know that like smoking cigarettes, chewing tobacco causes serious damage to sperm count, motility and DNA. This is a way of consuming smokeless tobacco but it is also a hidden danger to men’s fertility. In today’s time, people’s eating habits and lifestyle have deteriorated considerably.

Because of this, not only are heart attacks occurring at a young age, but the fertility rate of men and women has also deteriorated. In the recently released NFHS-6 report, concern has been expressed over the falling fertility rate of Indians.

Today the fertility rate of women in India is only 1.9 whereas it is considered better to be above 2. According to this, a woman gives birth to two children in her entire life. Let us tell you how dangerous tobacco is for fertility…

What do experts say

IVF specialist Dr. Monica Gupta of Kailash Deepak Hospital. She says that people often associate the habit of chewing tobacco only with oral cancer or dental problems, but it can also affect the fertility of men. As a doctor, I often meet patients who are planning to have a family, but they are not aware that some of their daily habits can also affect the quality of sperm.

Many harmful chemicals including nicotine are present in tobacco which increase oxidative stress in the body. This can have a direct effect on sperm. Problems like low sperm count, decreased sperm mobility and affected sperm quality can be seen in men who consume tobacco regularly. In some cases, the DNA of sperm can also be damaged, which can cause difficulty in conceiving.

Hormonal balance deteriorates

The expert further said that tobacco can also affect the hormonal balance of the body. Imbalanced levels of essential hormones in men can have a negative impact on fertility. Its effect increases gradually, hence many people are not able to detect it in time.

Don’t make this mistake even by mistake

If a man is planning to become a father, he is advised to stay away from tobacco and other addictive habits. A balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep and stress control are also important for good sperm health. It is important to remember that each person’s situation may be different. Therefore, if you are having trouble conceiving or have any concerns about fertility, the best step is to consult a specialist and get proper testing and advice.
