Currently, political turmoil is in full swing in Karnataka. There was speculation within the ruling Congress about the change of Chief Minister for several months, but today Chief Minister Siddaramaiah finally announced his resignation from the post. Meanwhile, sources associated with Siddaramaiah had told yesterday that he has sought an appointment with Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Thursday. Whereas today it was told from Lok Bhavan that the Chief Minister has not yet asked for an appointment with the Governor.
Amidst political speculation, Siddaramaiah called a cabinet meeting on Thursday, in which he announced to step down from the post of Chief Minister. With this announcement, the way for Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivkumar to become the Chief Minister was cleared. It is being said that Siddaramaiah can submit his resignation to the Governor this afternoon, although the Governor is not in Karnataka right now, hence he can resign in the Governor’s office itself.
Governor left for Mumbai last night itself
Amidst the discussion of changing the Chief Minister in Karnataka, Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot left for Mumbai last night itself. He reached Mumbai due to illness of one of his relatives. Then he left for Indore in the morning. Sources had claimed that CM Siddaramaiah had sought an appointment with the Governor this morning. But Lok Bhawan officials said on Thursday that the Chief Minister has not yet asked for an appointment with Governor Gehlot.
This came to light a day after the statement given by top sources associated with the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on Wednesday, in which they had said that Siddaramaiah has sought an appointment with Gehlot on Thursday. Lok Bhawan officials said that Gehlot is currently in his home town Indore in Madhya Pradesh.
To whom will Siddaramaiah submit his resignation?
On whether the Chief Minister has sought an appointment with the Governor, a top official at Lok Bhavan said, “The Governor is not here. There is no such information regarding the meeting. As of now, no such message or information has been received.” According to him, when the Governor returns, Siddaramaiah will be able to meet him.
On the question whether the Chief Minister can also submit his resignation to the Secretary of Lok Bhavan, the official said that if CM Siddaramaiah wants, he can do so.
So will this resignation be valid?
But when asked whether this would be as valid as submitting his resignation to the Governor, the official said, “Yes. When the Governor comes back, he will confirm it. Depending on the procedure, the Governor may ask him (Siddaramaiah) to come again and submit his resignation in person.”
