There is a commotion in Indian cricket at the moment. Even after winning the T20 World Cup, Team India looks very weak in this format. After losing the series for the first time to Ireland, the hopes of winning the series against England are also over. Many players including the team’s new captain Shreyas Iyer and coach Gautam Gambhir are on target. Sanju Samson has dropped. Amidst all this, the unique case of all is that of vice-captain Tilak Verma, whose place in the playing-11 is under question. In such a situation, now the eyes are fixed on whether he too will be dropped like Shubman Gill?
There was a gap of about 3 and a half months between Team India becoming the world champion and then taking the field again for the T20 series. During this period, some changes took place in Team India. Captain Suryakumar Yadav was not only removed from the captaincy but also from the team. their place Shreyas Iyer Was handed over the command. On the other hand, Akshar Patel, who was the vice-captain in the World Cup, was stripped of this responsibility and Tilak Verma was made the new vice-captain. Both the decisions have not been proved correct till now.
Tilak Verma’s performance and position ineffective
The selectors have taken a long bet on Iyer and it is possible that he may get a chance to prove himself in the next few series. But will Tilak Verma get this chance? Will Tilak Verma remain the T20 vice-captain of the team in future also? There are many reasons for this question and the most important among them is the performance of Tilak himself. His performance since IPL till now has been full of ups and downs. Runs are not coming from his bat at the pace and consistency that his role and the team require.
There is also a big problem with Tilak Verma’s position in the playing-11. Till a few months ago, he was batting in the top order, where he used to come at number three or four. But the situation changed with the return of Ishan Kishan and now Tilak is being fielded at number five or six. Tilak is not able to establish himself in this role. His struggles, especially against the spinners, are troubling. In 3 innings against England, he could score only 40 runs at a strike rate of 114, whereas before that against Ireland, he scored the maximum of 74 runs but the strike rate was only 110.
Will Tilak leave like Gill?
This is the reason why there is a constant question over Tilak Verma’s place in Team India. Now in such a situation the case of Shubhman Gill comes to mind. Gill was made the vice-captain of the T20 team only last year. But his bat did not work in the Asia Cup, Australia tour and then the South Africa series. Then he too was criticized for being made the vice-captain. Ultimately he was dropped from the team just before the T20 World Cup. Will BCCI now take a similar decision regarding the vice-captaincy of Tilak Verma and his place?
