OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has revealed that he was addicted to TikTok. He told that initially he used to use the app only for a few minutes, but gradually he started watching videos for hours. Eventually he realized that this habit was not good for him and he removed TikTok from his phone. He shared this during a podcast.
Started using TikTok while making Sora app
In a new episode of the How to Start a Startup podcast, Sam Altman explained that when OpenAI was working on its AI video app Sora, he deliberately started using TikTok. His objective was to understand how much time users spend on such platforms and he did not want to create a product that would take up more time than necessary. He said that earlier he had not used TikTok much, but while preparing the Sora app, it felt necessary to understand it closely.
The journey started from 10 minutes, use continued for hours
According to Altman, he thought that he would just watch TikTok for 10 minutes before sleeping and everything would be under his control. But after some time these 10 minutes turned into an hour. He told that on one Saturday he kept watching TikTok continuously for about three hours. Then he realized that this was not the experience he was expecting. He said that at that time using TikTok felt like an addiction. Later he reduced the usage to five to ten minutes, but finally deleted the app completely.
Also turned off phone notifications
Sam Altman also told that he has turned off all the notifications on his phone, even notifications from messaging apps. According to him, this decision proved to be very good for his life. In the podcast, he also mentioned OpenAI’s upcoming ChatGPT based hardware products. He said that these devices will be very useful and helpful for the people, but he is also confident that some people will misuse them, which can cause harm that cannot even be imagined right now.
