July 29, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Thyroid is a disease in which a person’s weight starts decreasing or increases rapidly. It is said that once this happens to someone, he has to take medicines for the rest of his life to control it. Apart from this, there is another myth that this is a disease affecting only adults. Does this really happen? If the child’s weight is increasing or decreasing rapidly, then parents should get his thyroid checked. This is a gland present in the throat which is like a butterfly. It converts whatever we eat into energy.

It has two types named hypothyroid and hyperthyroid. TV9 had a special conversation with Dr. Priya (Consultant (Endocrinology), Kailash Hospital, Dehradun) on thyroid in children. Know what the experts said about thyroid in children?

Dr. Priya says that many people think that only older people suffer from thyroid problems. but it’s not like that. Children can also have thyroid problems, especially hypothyroidism. This means that the thyroid gland is not producing thyroid hormone as per requirement. These hormones are very important for the proper growth of children, brain development and maintaining energy in the body.

So what should parents pay attention to?

  1. First of all, if your child’s height or physical growth is slowing down for his age or puberty is starting late, then definitely consult a doctor.
  2. Second, if the child remains tired all the time even after getting enough sleep, do not ignore it as mere laziness.
  3. Third, if the child is having difficulty concentrating in studies, is having trouble remembering things or suddenly his performance in school has started deteriorating, then thyroid problem can also be one of the reasons for this.
  4. Apart from this, if weight is increasing without any apparent reason and there is also constipation, then this can also be a sign. This is because when the thyroid works less, both the body’s metabolism and digestion slow down.
  5. Finally, if your child feels colder than others, his skin remains very dry or there is swelling on the front of the neck, then these signs should not be ignored at all.
  6. The good thing is that there is treatment for thyroid disease. Therefore, if you see many of these symptoms together, then definitely show your child to a pediatrician.
  7. It can be detected with a simple blood test and with timely treatment, the child can grow and develop normally.
