July 5, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Mujtaba Khamenei did not attend the funeral of his father Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Iran. Only three sons of Khamenei participated in Namaz-e-Najana. Khamenei’s son was seen for the first time after February 28. Khamenei’s funeral prayer was held in the Grand Mosque of Tehran. Apart from Mujtaba, the entire leadership of Iran participated in Namaz-e-Janaza. In fact, Iran’s security officials rejected the request of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

Even though he had expressed his desire to attend the funeral of his slain father and former leader Ali Khamenei. Officials fear that Israel could kill his son or discover his hiding place.

Did not even attend wife’s condolence meeting

Two unidentified members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard and a person preparing for the funeral said that Mojtaba Khamenei wants to see his father’s funeral to be held in Mashhad on July 9 and complete the rituals. But they have not received permission yet.
After being injured, Mujtaba Khamenei was not seen anywhere in public. His father, wife and son were killed in US-Israel attacks on 28 February. He also did not attend his wife’s condolence meeting in Tehran on Wednesday.

Four senior Iranian officials have said that Khamenei’s prolonged absence from public has raised concerns about the survival of his regime. Even though a written statement issued in Khamenei’s name approved talks with the US, Iran’s hardline leaders have vowed to resist diplomacy unless he comes forward publicly or releases a recording of his voice.

Meanwhile, hard-liners have called for the prosecution and even death penalty for Iranian negotiators from the faction of Iran’s conservative camp that considers itself pragmatist.
