Ram Gopal Verma Kaun Movie: Ram Gopal Varma is counted among those Bollywood filmmakers who have given many memorable and cult films to Hindi cinema. The specialty of his films has always been a different type of story, strong suspense and a screenplay that keeps people engaged till the end. Many films like ‘Satya’, ‘Company’, ‘Rangeela’, ‘Bhoot’ and ‘Sarkar’ gave him a distinct identity in the industry. But do you know that there is also a film of Ram Gopal Varma, the shooting of which was completed in just 15 days. Only three actors were seen in the film, there was not even a single song, yet it captivated the audience so much after its release that even today it is counted among the best suspense-thriller films of Bollywood. We are talking about the film ‘Kaun’ released in the year 1999.
‘Who?’ It was directed by Ram Gopal Varma and its story was written by Anurag Kashyap. Urmila Matondkar, Manoj Bajpayee and Sushant Singh were seen in lead roles in this film. The special thing is that only these three characters are seen in the entire film, no one else.
‘Kaun’ was the remake of this film
The film ‘Kaun’, released on 26 February 1999, was the Hindi remake of the Hollywood film ‘Signpost to Murder’ released in 1965. However, it was presented in a new style according to the Indian audience. Many such mysteries were also left in the film, the answers to which are not found till the end. Like in this film, it is not known till the end who killed the cat. These incomplete mysteries make the film even more interesting.
There was not a single song in the film
‘Who?’ Another special thing was that not a single song was included in it. At a time when almost every Bollywood film had many songs, this film, which was released without any songs, caught people’s attention on the basis of its story and acting. This is the reason why even today it is counted among the most unique suspense films of Hindi cinema.
Who’s story is what?
The story of the film revolves around a house where a girl is alone on a rainy night. Then an unknown person knocks on the door and after this a game of suspense begins, which keeps the audience engaged till the last scene. The interesting thing is that no name of Urmila Matondkar’s character is mentioned in the entire film. Everyone just calls her ‘Ma’am’.
Whose budget and collection
According to reports, ‘Who?’ It was made with a budget of around Rs 2.5 crore. After release, the film earned around Rs 7 crore at the worldwide box office. That means this film did more than double its budget and proved to be a superhit at the box office. Even today, 27 years after its release, ‘Who?’ Is counted among the best psychological suspense-thriller films of Bollywood.
