Waking up at the same time every day, taking hundreds of supplements, following a strict diet, getting every body part checked regularly and spending around 2 million dollars (about Rs 17 crore) every year just to slow down the pace of ageing. This may sound like a story from a science fiction movie, but America’s famous tech entrepreneur and biohacker Brian Johnson has been doing the same for the last several years. Their aim is not only to stay healthy, but also to prevent aging and live as long as possible. But now there has been a turn in his life which has created discussion all over the world. Brian Johnson himself has revealed that he has been diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease for which there is currently no cure.
This news is also surprising because Brian Johnson is counted among the people who invest the most in health in the world. He has been taking the help of a large team of doctors, latest tests and experimental methods to reduce his age and keep his body young. Despite this, he was diagnosed with a disease called Autoimmune Gastritis (AIG), in which the body’s immune system itself starts attacking the inner lining of the stomach. This can lead to iron and vitamin B12 deficiency, anemia and increased risk of stomach cancer in the long run. Brian says that this disease kept growing in his body for years without any major symptoms and now it was detected.

Who is Brian Johnson?
48 year old Brian Johnson is an American tech entrepreneur. After selling his company, he came into limelight across the world because of his anti-aging research and health program named Blueprint. He has been claiming that he wants to slow down the pace of aging with the help of science. For this, they take prescribed diet, regular exercise, dozens of medical tests and many types of supplements every day. There were 30 doctors with him all the time. But, recently he has told people about his illness through his social media.
Which disease occurred?
Brian Johnson told that he has autoimmune gastritis (AIG). In this disease, the body’s immune system mistakenly starts attacking the internal cells of the stomach. Gradually, the ability to produce acid in the stomach may reduce and the body may not be able to absorb iron and vitamin B12 properly. In many patients, no obvious symptoms are seen for a long time, hence the disease is caught late. Brian Johnson said that diagnosing this disease was not easy. At present there is no permanent cure for it, so it can only be controlled. After taking iron medicine, his iron deficiency has gone away, but now he will have to undergo regular checkups for vitamin deficiency and the risk of stomach cancer throughout his life.
How was the disease detected?
Brian told that for many years the level of iron stores (ferritin) in his body was continuously low, but due to the rest of the tests being normal, the real reason for this was not revealed. Later the doctors conducted various tests like endoscopy, blood test and stomach biopsy. The tests found anti-parietal cell antibodies much higher than normal and the biopsy confirmed autoimmune gastritis.

Is there a cure for it?
At present there is no permanent cure for this disease. Doctors mainly recommend addressing iron and vitamin B12 deficiencies, getting regular checkups done, and keeping an eye on the risk of stomach cancer. Brian Johnson says that he will work with a team of scientists and doctors on new treatment possibilities, although he also admits that many of these methods are still experimental.
This disease occurs in 2-5% people
Describing his illness, Brian Johnson wrote in a social media post that this disease occurs in about 2% to 5% of people, but the actual number may be higher because many people do not know for a long time that they are suffering from it. He said that he will not give up and will try to understand this disease and find a better treatment for it. Also, whatever new information is received, we will share it with people. Brian also told that his eating habits were not good in his childhood. He used to eat and drink a lot of sweet cereals, soft drinks and junk food.
