This big achievement was recorded in the name of GAGAN, India joined the list of selected countries to do so.

July 2, 2026 by Uma Shankar

GAGAN, GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation – is India’s indigenous Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) developed by ISRO and Airports Authority of India. It increases the accuracy of GPS and provides ‘integrity information’ to aircraft for safe navigation. GPS signals can be degraded due to atmospheric factors. Even a small mistake in aviation is dangerous. GAGAN fixes this by providing real-time corrections and alerts. It is fully operational since 2015.

How does GAGAN work?

It has mainly 5 parts

  1. INRES 15 monitors GPS signals across the country and detects faults.
  2. INMCC 2 Processes data to generate correction and integrity information.
  3. INLUS 3 sending information from ground to GAGAN satellite.
  4. Communication 4 Real-time linking of all stations

Network DGCA successfully conducted satellite-based landing system approach on a commercial jet for the first time in India using GAGAN.

Uses other than aviation:

Maritime navigation, road transport, railways, disaster management, defence, telecom, surveying and mapping.

way forward

Together with NavIC, GAGAN will reduce dependence on foreign systems. Use will increase in transport, disaster management, surveying. The main pillar of self-reliant India and technology-driven future.

What is its importance?

1. Operational since 2015 – India is the fourth country after America, Europe, Japan
2. PinS is the basis for new processes like helicopter landing.
3. NavIC reference station agreement in South Africa in 2025

According to the ministry, this is a big confidence in this era of GPS spoofing and jamming. The Civil Aviation Ministry said in a statement issued on Wednesday about ‘Gagan’ (Gagan), “(Gagan) helps in more accurate positioning in coastal and sea areas. It supports intelligent transport systems and fleet management for road transport and highways. For railways, it improves operational efficiency and safety. In disaster management, it helps in accurate location tracking during emergency situations and natural disasters.” It also “enhances navigation for defense operations. Helps in reliable synchronization of telecom infrastructure. Improves the accuracy of ground surveys and geospatial mapping. By extending the benefits of precise satellite navigation beyond aviation, GAGAN is contributing to more efficient public services.”
