There will be a reduction in the oil used in mid-day meals in West Bengal schools, there will be a 10 percent reduction in LPG.

The School Education Department of West Bengal has issued instructions to all schools to reduce the use of oil and LPG by 10 percent in preparing PM nutrition food. According to an official memorandum dated May 18, 2026, this instruction has come after the instructions of the Chief Secretary of the state government. This order has been sent to District Magistrates, Sub-Divisional Officers, Education Department of GTA and Chairman of Kolkata Primary School Council. In which it has been said that the instructions to reduce the use of cooking oil and LPG in preparing PM nutrition food should be implemented with immediate effect.

While issuing the advice of 10 percent reduction in the production of PM nutrition food on behalf of the government, it was said that in today’s time, childhood obesity is a matter of increasing concern. PM Poshan Yojana provides an excellent opportunity to develop healthy eating habits, encouraging students to prepare and eat fresh and nutritious food using minimum oil. Also, the problem of obesity in children can be reduced. Less use of oil will improve the health of children.

The order comes into force with immediate effect

This order has been implemented by the Ministry of Education and the School Education Department of the state. Through this, schools and cooks have been instructed to use healthy cooking techniques like grilling, steaming or boiling instead of deep-frying. Also, the instructions for less use of PM oil and LPG should be implemented with immediate effect.

Emphasis on healthy eating habits

In this instruction, the government has to provide nutritious food to primary students as per pre-determined food norms, for which 5 grams of oil has been fixed per day and 7.5 grams of oil per day for upper primary students. In which it has been asked to ensure a deduction of 10 percent. It says that for better health of school students, it is necessary to reduce the use of cooking oil and LPG by 10 percent.
