
Taking a big step towards making the country drug-free, the Central Government has made its strategy against drugs more aggressive. Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Friday chaired the 10th top-level meeting of the Narco-Coordination Center (NCORD). On this occasion, he released “Vision Document on Drug Control 2026-2029” and “NCB Annual Report-2025”. On this occasion, he also e-inaugurated the new zonal offices of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Jammu and Guwahati.
Home Minister during the meeting Amit Shah Launched ‘Online Drugs Disposal Fortnite Campaign’. Under this campaign, a target has been set to destroy 2,09,500 kg of drugs worth more than Rs 6,000 crore.
The new strategy will be ‘Detect, Disrupt and Destroy’
Amit Shah said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is working on the policy of ‘zero tolerance’ against drugs. He made it clear that in the next three years, the entire drug network and its ecosystem will be attacked in such a way that it will not be able to recover for decades.
He said that now the strategy of ‘Detect, Disrupt and Destroy’ will be adopted to deal with the growing threat of narco-terrorism.
- Detect: Identification of drug networks and cartels through technical and human intelligence in border and sensitive areas.
- Disrupt: Action on smugglers’ financial network, hawala, crypto transactions, supply chain and illegal labs.
- Destroy: Strict punishment to kingpins, eradication of illegal farming and factories and reducing the demand for drugs through rehabilitation.
Roadmap prepared on four pillars for 2026-2029. The new vision document of the government is based on four key pillars-
- Further strengthening enforcement, intelligence and operations.
- Prohibiting the production of precursor and synthetic drugs.
- To promote awareness and rehabilitation through demand reduction and rehabilitation.
- Making investigating agencies modern and accountable through capacity building and better coordination.
- The government will implement this entire strategy under ‘Whole of Government’ and ‘Whole of Society’ approach.
ANTF will get more strength
While directing the Chief Secretaries and DGPs of all the states, the Home Minister said that the Anti Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) should be made full-time, well-resourced and accountable.
He also said that financial investigation under ED and PMLA should be made mandatory in big NDPS cases, so that the properties of criminals can be confiscated. Besides, states were also asked to take steps towards setting up special NDPS courts.
Instructions were also given to speed up the process of Red Corner Notice and extradition through CBI against drug mafias and gangsters hiding abroad.
The Home Minister said that between 2014 and 2026, remarkable success has been achieved in the action against drugs.
- 1.18 crore kilograms of drugs were seized, whose estimated value is Rs 1.84 lakh crore.
- 42.47 lakh kilograms of drugs were destroyed, whose value was estimated to be approximately Rs 89,896 crore.
- 8.75 lakh NDPS cases registered.
- 10.97 lakh people were arrested.
- In the year 2025, 42,282 acres of illegal opium cultivation was destroyed.
Amit Shah said that this fight against drugs is not only the responsibility of the government or any one agency, but of the entire society. He appealed to parents, teachers, youth, religious and social organizations to come forward and be a part of the public awareness campaign.
He expressed confidence that with the new strategy of the government and the collective cooperation of the society, the goal of a developed India as well as ‘drug-free India’ will be achieved by 2047.
