The announcement of Sheikh Hasina’s return to Bangladesh has put Tariq Rahman’s government in a state of shock, after which the BNP government has decided to hastily remove President Mohammad Shahabuddin. Sources in the Bangladesh President’s office told local newspaper Desh Vantur that Rahman’s government has asked the President to resign. For this he has been given time till August.
According to the President’s Office, his tenure is till 2028, but he has been asked to step down by August. However, he has not taken any decision on whether the President will resign or not.
Why is the President’s resignation being taken?
1. President Mohammad Shahabuddin is considered close to Sheikh Hasina. In 2023, Sheikh Hasina made Shahabuddin the President. When Sheikh Hasina was overthrown, there was a demand to remove the President too, but due to constitutional provisions, BNP opposed it at that time. During the Yunus government, BNP strongly supported the President, due to which Shahabuddin was not removed from the post of President.
2. The government fears that if Sheikh Hasina returns here, the President may play some game with the help of law. In such a situation, the BNP government will not be able to take a tough decision against Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Hasina and her party are still very strong in Bangladesh. If Haseena makes a strong comeback, then Tariq Rehman’s troubles may increase in the future.
3. Tariq Rehman’s government wants the President to step down from his post citing ill health. Recently, President Shahabuddin had a heart operation in London. He is said to be ill for a long time.
Hasina’s return by the end of this year
In August 2024, Sheikh Hasina was overthrown after the rebellion in Bangladesh. After this Sheikh Hasina came to Delhi from Dhaka. After this Sheikh Hasina’s party was banned in Bangladesh. Tariq Rehman’s party won the general elections held in February this year.
Sheikh Hasina has decided to return to Dhaka after this. 79 year old Sheikh Hasina has said in her announcement that her struggle is not going to stop. This announcement of Hasina has created a political stir in Bangladesh.
There are more than 600 cases registered against Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh. He has received death sentence in 10 cases. Despite this, the announcement of his return has increased the tension of the government.
