There was a heated debate in the restaurant regarding water, the customer said – first give the option and then sell the bottle.

June 20, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Every customer who goes to eat at a restaurant expects that he will get good service and his basic needs will also be taken care of. After all, any business does not run only for earning, it also has to maintain the trust of the customers, but recently a video that went viral on social media has forced people to think. In the video, a customer shared such an experience of a famous restaurant in Hyderabad, which left many people angry.

The video showed that the customer asked for normal drinking water from the restaurant staff. In response he was told that water is not provided free of cost here. When the customer asked if RO water could be available, the waiter clearly said that RO water is only for the use of employees and not for customers. If the customer wants water then he will have to buy bottled water.

Isn’t water complimentary?

After this answer, the customer raised the question that when a bottle of mineral water is already kept on every table, then shouldn’t the customers be asked whether they want the same water or ordinary drinking water? The waiter told that water is not complimentary here and one has to pay for the bottle. The matter did not stop here. The customer asked to call the restaurant manager. The discussion progressed further when the manager arrived. The manager refused to believe that the restaurant refuses to provide free water to the customers, but the customer said that if the water is normal then why is pre-bottled water kept on every table? His argument was that customers should be given the option. First they should be asked whether they want bottled water or normal drinking water, only then the bottle should be served.

The customer also said that placing the bottle on the table without asking and then charging for it is not the right way. Even after the conversation was over, he noticed that other customers were also being given bottled water in the same manner, which further increased his displeasure. While sharing the video, the customer told another interesting thing. According to him, a water bottle with MRP of Rs 9 is served in the restaurant at Rs 4 plus GST, which they call a subsidized price. But if a customer wants to take the same bottle outside with him, he is charged up to Rs 25. The customer said that this is directly like charging more than the MRP.

After much debate, he was finally given normal drinking water in a coffee cup. Expressing his displeasure, the customer said that he was made to feel as if providing water was a favour, whereas clean and safe drinking water is the basic right of every customer. According to him, the issue is not about saving or spending a few rupees, but about thinking and behavior with the customer.
