India’s nuclear energy plan is going to get a big support. Australia has finally agreed to start the process of selling uranium to India for peaceful use. Both the countries announced this decision after the meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Melbourne. This agreement was stuck for many years due to the fear of use in weapons. Now after the signing of the administrative agreement, the way for uranium export between the two countries has been cleared. India aims to achieve 100 gigawatt nuclear power capacity by 2047 and this decision is being considered an important step in that direction.
Why did the path to compromise open after years?
An agreement on uranium exports between India and Australia was first made in 2014, but it could not be implemented. The biggest concern was that this uranium might not be used in a weapons program. Now both the countries have signed an administrative agreement, which is expected to remove the obstacles in implementing the already existing agreement. This decision was announced jointly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Melbourne. However, both the leaders did not tell how much quantity of uranium India would get and when its supply would start.

Why is Australia so important for India?
Australia is among the countries with the largest known reserves of uranium in the world. The special thing is that Australia itself does not use nuclear power or nuclear weapons and all the uranium extracted from there is exported. On the other hand, India wants to rapidly increase its nuclear energy capacity. The government aims to create 100 gigawatt nuclear power generation capacity by 2047, which can provide electricity to about 6 crore homes every year. In such a situation, uranium from Australia can play an important role in meeting India’s long-term energy needs.
What was the biggest obstacle so far?
India is not a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). For this reason, Australia for a long time refused to sell uranium to countries which were not part of this treaty. India has been saying that this treaty is discriminatory, because it considers only those five countries as having nuclear weapons which had conducted nuclear tests before January 1967. After the 1998 nuclear tests, there was an international technical embargo on India and a ban on uranium trade. Later in 2008, Nuclear Suppliers Group gave special exemption to India, after which India started making bilateral agreements with different countries. Such an agreement has also been reached with Canada.
Why is this agreement important for India’s electricity needs?
India has almost doubled its nuclear energy capacity in the last 10 years, but despite this, the share of nuclear energy in the country’s total electricity generation is still around 3 percent. In view of the rapidly increasing population, industries and demand for electricity, the government wants to increase the scope of nuclear energy in the coming years. For this reason, continuous availability of uranium is considered very important for India. Once supplies from Australia start, India will have another reliable source of fuel, which can also help future new nuclear projects. India aims to establish 100 GW nuclear power capacity by 2047. The government estimates that this will provide electricity to about 6 crore houses every year.
Not just uranium, defense partnership also strengthened
During the meeting held in Melbourne, the two countries not only talked about the uranium agreement, but also agreed to give a new direction to defense and security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. The joint statement said that relations between India and Australia are now becoming deeper and more ambitious than before. Both countries reiterated their resolve to advance regional security, maritime cooperation and strategic partnership. This meeting took place at a time when Australia had recently expressed concern over China’s missile activities in the South Pacific region. However, both the Prime Ministers did not take the name of China in their joint statement nor did they answer the media questions.
Trade between the two countries is also continuously increasing
Relations between India and Australia are not limited to just the strategic level. The two countries have also come increasingly closer on the trade front. According to Australian government data, the total trade in goods and services between the two countries in the financial year 2024-25 was 54.4 billion Australian dollars, or about 37.7 billion US dollars. India has now become Australia’s fifth largest trading partner. This visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also considered important towards further strengthening the economic and strategic relations between the two countries. Before visiting Australia, Modi had gone to Indonesia, while after this his New Zealand tour is also scheduled. India had signed a free trade agreement with New Zealand in April.
What will change next for India?
The biggest advantage of starting uranium export from Australia will be that India will get a new and reliable source for nuclear energy projects. This may give impetus to plans to increase power production in future. However, it has not yet been made clear as to when the first consignment of uranium will arrive and in what quantity it will be supplied. But after the signing of the administrative agreement, the process that had been stalled for many years has moved forward. This decision is being considered important in terms of energy security, clean electricity and strategic relations between the two countries.
What is the meaning?
The implementation of the uranium agreement between India and Australia is not just a matter of fuel supply. It is also a sign of growing trust, strategic partnership and energy security between the two countries. While India is working on the target of increasing nuclear energy capacity by 2047, Australia is among the countries with the largest uranium reserves in the world. In such a situation, this agreement can give new strength to the relations between the two countries in the coming years.
