The system of conducting competitive examinations across the country has once again come under question. This time the matter is of General Duty (GD) examination of Staff Selection Commission (SSC). In many districts of Uttar Pradesh, examinations had to be postponed due to alleged mismanagement, server failure and calling of more students than the capacity, after which angry candidates took to the streets and created a ruckus.
Candidates arrived in Lucknow to take the exam in the scorching heat of 46 degrees Celsius, but were told that the server was not working. After waiting for several hours the exam was postponed. Angered by this decision, the students created a ruckus at the centre. The situation became even more serious in Kanpur, when candidates alleged that the exam paper was distributed before the scheduled time. Due to fear of paper leak, students got angry and blocked the road. ADCP Shiva Singh said that after talks the students were somehow pacified.
1035 students instead of 505, vandalism and jam
At an examination center located in Andawa, Prayagraj, arrangements were made for 505 students, but the administration called 1035 candidates in the second shift. The situation remained the same in the third shift also, due to double the number of students than the capacity, the entire system collapsed. Angry candidates blocked the road and vandalized computers, chairs, coolers etc.
In a degree college in Gorakhpur, 500 candidates reached a center with a capacity of 250 students. The administration asked half the students to return. On this, a candidate said, “Some children went inside, the rest were thrown out.” Exam controller Vijay Kumar termed it a technical reason and said that there was more seats allotted and the missed students will be given a second chance.
Why play with our future?- Students
The students creating ruckus had only one question, why play with our future? A candidate said that he had to return after standing outside the examination center for hours. Recruitment to the posts of constables in paramilitary forces (CRPF, BSF, ITBP, CISF, SSB) and other security agencies is done through SSC GD exam. This time around 49 lakh candidates had applied, whereas the total vacancies are only 25487. That means 192 contenders for one post. If the system itself collapses amidst such tough competition, then it is a dishonest betrayal of the candidates.
Is this the story of NEET, CBSE and now SSC GD?
Questions have been raised repeatedly on the examination system of the country. First, cases of irregularities in NEET exam and then cases of wrong marks being distributed to students in CBSE exam came to light. When the mistake was caught, the reply was, “Sorry, it was a mistake.” Now the same is the situation with SSC GD, in this era of AI and space technology where rockets are landing on the moon. At the same time, counting the number of students at the examination center was also not within the control of the system.
Big question on the system
How long will this chaotic deception continue? When a student prepares for a competitive exam, it is not just him who prepares. His entire family dreams, his parents work hard to pay the coaching fees, but the negligence of the system shatters their dreams. SSC GD exam will continue till May 30, but now all eyes will be on how the administration deals with such mismanagement in future.
