Once upon a time, the condition of government schools in Punjab was counted among the most backward states in the country. Punjab was ranked 22nd in the field of education in 2016-17, slipped to 26th in 2018-19 and to 27th in 2020. At that time, there was only one question in the minds of millions of parents that how would the future of their children change. Children studying in government schools were trying to save their dreams amid lack of resources, weak infrastructure and limited opportunities.
In 2022, the people of Punjab decided for change and handed over the responsibility to the Aam Aadmi Party government. Today, within just four years, Punjab has done what was considered difficult to even imagine. According to the latest data of NITI Aayog’s Education Quality Report 2026, Punjab has achieved the first position in the country in the field of school education, leaving behind states like Kerala, Maharashtra and Delhi.
Victory of dreams of children of Punjabi family
It’s not just a ranking. This is the victory of dreams of millions of Punjabi families. This is a victory for those parents who wanted their child to get world-class education, whether poor or rich. This is a victory for the hard work of those teachers who got the opportunity to move forward with new thinking and new resources.
The NITI Aayog report shows that Punjab’s children have achieved 82 percent proficiency in the language level of class three, while Kerala’s was at 75 percent. In mathematics, Punjab scored 78 percent, while Kerala stood at 70 percent. Punjab’s performance in Class 9 Mathematics was 52 percent, while Kerala could only reach 45 percent. These figures clearly show that the basic education of children in the government schools of Punjab has become stronger than before.
Today electricity is available in 99.9 percent government schools of Punjab. Working computers are available in 99 percent of schools. Smart classrooms have been built in more than 80 percent of schools. In availability of smart classrooms, Punjab is at 80.1 percent while Haryana is at 50.3 percent. In terms of internet facility, Punjab is at 88.9 percent while Haryana is at 78.9 percent. This difference is not just of figures, but of thinking and priorities.
Mission of building future, not politics
The most interesting fact is that the performance of government schools in Gurugram, Haryana’s most prosperous and cyber city city, is far behind the lowest ranked districts of Punjab. This shows the strength of the model which made government schools not a subject of politics but a mission of building the future.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Punjab has made education a people’s movement by taking it out of government files. Teachers were sent for training to countries like Finland and Singapore so that the children of Punjab could also take advantage of the world’s best education models. This is the reason why 786 students of government schools have passed national level examinations like JEE Main and 1284 students have passed national level examinations like NEET. This achievement shows that talent is not just the property of private schools, given the opportunity, children of government schools can also become the future of the country.
The state government has recruited more than 13 thousand new teachers and staff. English Age program is being run for 3 lakh students so that the child of Punjab can stand with confidence on any stage of the world. 118 state-of-the-art Schools of Eminence have been established in the state which are going to become the new identity of Punjab in the coming years.
Children are getting experience of global education
Today, children taking admission in government schools of Punjab are not just reading books, but are also getting experience of modern labs, digital technology, smart classrooms and global level education. This is the same dream that strengthens the government education system in developed countries like America, Europe, Australia and Japan. Punjab is moving rapidly in the same direction.
On the other hand, there are many states where the same governments have been running for years, but the government education system is still waiting for the expected change. There is a BJP government in Haryana for the last 12 years, but Punjab has gone far ahead of it on many parameters of education. This shows that merely being in power for a long time is not enough, intentions and priorities are equally important.
In the villages of Punjab, parents now proudly say that their child studies in a government school. This change did not come from any advertisement or slogan. This change is visible in the form of new school buildings, smart classrooms, trained teachers, better results and a brighter future for children.
