The splendor of uniform, extortion of Rs 4 crore, connection with Lawrence-Jaggu gang… This is how Inspector Nagra got trapped in FBI’s trap, inside story of dark exploits.

July 18, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Punjab Crime News: The story is of Inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, the wanted former SHO of the American investigative agency FBI. Nagra has been arrested by Punjab Police. Nagra is facing a serious allegation of misusing his position and along with Lawrence Bishnoi and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang to extort 4 lakh dollars (about Rs 4 crore) from an NRI family living in Los Angeles, USA. To crack down on organized criminal groups operating from American soil and scripting crimes in India, the FBI along with the police of California, Canada and Europe conducted a major joint operation, codenamed ‘Operation Hard Ball’.

With the help of technical surveillance, call intercepts and digital forensics, the FBI was investigating the contacts between criminals sitting in America and gangsters lodged in Indian jails. Meanwhile, an Indian origin victim living in California complained of extortion to the local police and FBI.

When the FBI tracked this international extortion call, its links were found not to any criminal, but directly to a government officer posted in Hoshiarpur district of Punjab, the then SHO of Tanda police station, Gurinderjit Singh Nagra.

Triangle of America and Punjab from Silchar Jail

The FBI charge sheet has exposed the very vicious way of working of this syndicate. Notorious gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, lodged in Silchar jail of Assam, was running his international network from inside the jail. Inspector Nagra had direct links to 22-year-old Gurlal Singh, resident of Stockton, California, who is an active member of the Bhagwanpuria syndicate and an illegal immigrant. Gurlal used to identify victims of affluent Punjabi origin in America and send complete information about their relatives living in India (especially Punjab) to Inspector Nagra through WhatsApp and other encrypted apps.

Threat to implicate fiancee and relatives

Inspector Nagra made the investigation of the murder of a big businessman Balwinder Singh in Punjab in January 2026 a means of his illegal extortion. In April 2026, when Gurlal Singh threatened the victim’s family in America, immediately after that, SHO Nagra sitting in Punjab made that NRI, his father and his sister false accused and suspects in the Balwinder murder case. Nagra’s courage increased so much that he held a press conference on 24 May 2026. He publicly stated before the media that three new names have emerged in the Balwinder murder case and they will soon be named and arrested.

The very next day after the press conference, Nagra called the victim’s family in America. He said that you did not give 4 lakh dollars (about 3.4 to 4 crore rupees), that is why I have raised your name in the media. While sealing the deal, he said that if the entire amount was received, he would immediately make the two names disappear from the case diary.

Suspicion on other people hiding in the police department also

According to the initial investigation, at present Nagra has been made the main accused in the FIR, but top officials of Punjab Police believe that such a big international game cannot be played by a single inspector. There is strong suspicion that Nagra got the help of the Local Investigation Unit (CIA staff) or some local policemen in manipulating the files of the murder case, preparing false testimonies and organizing press conferences. The Special Wing of Punjab Police is now scanning the call detail records (CDR) of all those police personnel and close associates of Nagra who were involved with him in the investigation of Balwinder murder case.

Why was the action taken late? Administration wakes up after grudges

On July 7, 2026, when the US Justice Department and FBI made public the charge sheet against Nagra in a California court, he came into the limelight of the international media. However, the Punjab Police did not immediately suspend him, but only sent him to the police line, due to which the state government got a lot of flak. According to police officials, they were waiting to receive official judicial documents from the FBI through the US Embassy or the Home Ministry. Since the allegations were related to foreign soil, the Punjab Police had to collect enough Indian technical evidence to register a case against Nagra so that the case could stand in court.

Fact-Finding Team Report

On the instructions of Jalandhar Range DIG Naveen Singla, the fact-finding team of SP Vineet Ahlawat examined technical evidence, phone records and statements of the victims’ families. After finding strong evidence in this departmental investigation, late night on Friday, July 17, 2026, a case was registered against Nagra under serious sections of the Anti-Corruption Act and extortion and he was arrested.

Benami properties worth crores and preparation for dismissal

After being promoted from Sub-Inspector to Inspector, Nagra took full advantage of his posting in many police stations of Manjha and Doaba region of Punjab. According to intelligence inputs, Nagara has purchased benami properties and luxurious lands worth crores of rupees by intimidating the rich families of Doaba region based on the inputs received from the gangster network. The Vigilance Bureau is now conducting a separate financial investigation into his movable and immovable properties. Nagra has been suspended immediately after his arrest. Under Punjab Police Rules (PPR), he will be dismissed from the job as soon as the departmental inquiry is completed in this very serious matter of tarnishing the image of the country and the department.

Preparation for extradition to America: What will be the punishment?

American First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essely has made it clear that the US government will demand the extradition of Inspector Nagra from the Indian government in this case so that he can be tried in the California court. Since the extradition treaty between India and the US is in force, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India will consider this legal request. However, Nagra has also been arrested in India, so the legal process and trial here will be completed first.

Under Indian law, he can be sentenced to rigorous imprisonment of 7 to 10 years. At the same time, under US federal law, there is a provision for a prison sentence of up to 20 years if found guilty under extortion racketeering and foreign extortion.

NRI wing becomes active: families with ‘Dinky Route’ made victims

Members of hundreds of families from Doaba region (Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala) live abroad. Gangsters and this corrupt police syndicate often target families whose children have gone abroad illegally (through the dinky route). Fearing stigma and the safety of their elderly parents living in India, many NRI families quietly paid extortion money worth lakhs of rupees and never filed a complaint. Punjab Police has now activated its NRI wing and has started secretly collecting information from other such victim families.
