India’s BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is currently making waves in the global defense market. India, once counted among the world’s largest arms buyers, is now on its way to becoming a major arms exporter on the basis of BrahMos. After countries like Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam, now more than 14 countries of the world are standing in the queue to buy this missile.
Where is the market of BrahMos opening?
There is tremendous demand for BrahMos missile in many areas of the world.
- South-East Asia: Philippines was the first country to sign a deal worth about Rs 3,200 crore ($375M) with India in 2022, the delivery of which has also started. After this, Indonesia and recently in May 2026, Vietnam have signed a big deal with India worth about Rs 5,300 crore ($620M). Now Thailand and Malaysia have also shown official interest in purchasing it.
- Middle East: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is in continuous talks with India to strengthen its maritime and air security.
- Latin America and Africa: South American country Chile and African country South Africa also want to include this missile in their army.
- Russia also in line: The most interesting thing is that India has made this missile in collaboration with Russia, but now Russia itself has expressed its desire to buy it from India.
What is so special about BrahMos?
After all, why are countries around the world so desperate for BrahMos? There are 3 biggest reasons behind this.
- World’s fastest speed (Supersonic Speed): BrahMos is one of the fastest operational cruise missiles in the world. It flies at a speed of approximately three times the speed of sound, i.e. Mach 2.8 to 3.0. Due to such high speed, the enemy air defense system does not get a chance to recover and it destroys the target in the blink of an eye.
- ‘Fire and forget’ and perfect aim: This missile works on the technique of ‘fire and forget’. Once launched it finds its own way. Its accuracy is so amazing that it detects enemy warships or military bases and targets them accurately.
- Attack by land, sea and air: Another great feature of BrahMos is its multi-platform capability. It can be fired from land, warships, submarines and fighter planes. With this, any country gets many types of military capabilities from a single missile system.
Why did its demand suddenly increase?
China’s increasing aggression is a big reason behind this huge demand for BrahMos. China’s neighboring countries are scared of its military activities in the South China Sea and the Indo-Pacific region. For countries like Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia, BrahMos is not just a weapon but a “deterrence”. This means that if any country thinks of attacking them, it will have the fear of suffering huge losses due to the presence of BrahMos.
