The increasing tension between Iran and America may now affect the world’s oil supply. According to Reuters report, Iran has told Yemen’s Houthi rebels to be prepared to close the important sea route of the Red Sea if the US attacks its power infrastructure. If this happens, two major oil routes of the world may be affected simultaneously, which may create a major crisis in the global energy market. The increasing tension between America and Iran can now become a cause of concern for the whole world.
According to Reuters report, Iran has given a clear message to Yemen’s Houthi rebels that if America attacks its power infrastructure, then they should be prepared to close the sea route to the Red Sea. The report quoted three sources related to Iran and the region as saying that this plan has been discussed in Tehran and its message has been conveyed to the Houthi leadership. However, Iran’s Foreign Ministry and Houthi spokesperson have not given any official reaction on this. Houthi rebels have deployed missiles and drones near the Bab-al-Mandeb strait. This is the same sea route through which ships going to and from the Red Sea pass. At present they are just waiting for the final order. This development is also important because the Strait of Hormuz has already become a center of tension. If the Red Sea route is also affected, the two largest sea routes for oil supply from the Middle East could be in trouble simultaneously. This can have a direct impact on crude oil prices and supply chains across the world.
Work will be done on the orders of IRGC
A source claimed that representatives of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) present in Yemen will decide when to close Bab-al-Mandeb. At the same time, people close to the Houthis say that they are fully prepared for any action. Meanwhile, Houthi rebels have also launched missile attacks on Saudi Arabia. They allege that Saudi Arabia bombed the airport under their control. Due to this, the ceasefire that had been going on between the two sides for four years has also been broken.
Experts on Middle East affairs say that if there is an attack on ships or infrastructure related to oil export in the Red Sea, its impact will not be limited to this region only. Saudi Arabia exports a large part of its oil from Yanbu port on the Red Sea. In such a situation, any kind of disruption there can affect the energy supply of the entire world. Experts believe that Iran wants to increase economic pressure on America through this strategy. America has long been alleging that Iran provides arms, funds and training to the Houthis, while Tehran has consistently rejected these allegations. In the coming days, the impact of this tension may be visible on the global oil market and maritime trade.
