Delhi High Court has given strict orders to the Central Government that the false posts going viral on social media should be removed immediately. This post is related to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, several judges of the Supreme Court, and some Union Ministers. These posts falsely claimed that Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, several Supreme Court judges and Union ministers had gone to London earlier this month to participate in a badminton tournament at government expense. The court said that such wrong information brings disrepute to judicial institutions.
On Friday, the vacation bench of Justice Tejas Karia said that these posts are superficially wrong and malicious. These posts were definitely an insult to the judiciary, the executive and the game of badminton. The court said, “Continued spread of such content has a direct impact on the reputation of these institutions and if it is not stopped immediately, public confidence in the justice system may diminish.”
What was the allegation made?
The court was hearing the petition of Badminton Association of India (BAI). In this there was a demand to remove social media content. It was alleged that a large Indian delegation of senior judges and ministers had attended a badminton event in the United Kingdom.
However, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the central government, argued that the posts being spread on social media were “completely false and misleading”. An attempt was made to create a “fabricated story” about the visit, but Justice Karia said at the outset that the central government had the right to take action against social media intermediaries spreading such information.
‘The pictures in the post are completely wrong’
The court said that these posts were a planned campaign of false news to malign the reputation of the Chief Justice, Supreme Court and High Court judges and Union ministers. These posts are not general criticism or news, but are based on complete lies. In these, wrong pictures were made viral and even those people were said to be involved in the tournament, who according to the evidence presented in the court had not even gone there.
