The picture is still long… Why is the deal between Iran and America not finalized even after being signed?

June 18, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Even if a deal is made between Iran and America, it takes a long time. In other words, just as the audience was left waiting for The End while enjoying the Bollywood blockbuster Dhurandhar 2, something similar happens in the Iran-America deal. Yesterday (June 17), US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masood Pejeshkian might have given good news to the whole world by signing the MoU, but in reality it will be months before the agreement between the two countries is finalized. After signing, talks will begin and it will be decided how to proceed on controversial issues like nuclear and Hormuz. A time of two months has been fixed for all these discussions. However, some experts believe that it will take more time than this. Rami Khouri, a fellow at the American University in Lebanon, has said that it will take more than the 60-day timeline to finalize the agreement between the two countries.

It is not surprising that this happens in the case of America and Iran. The disputes between the two are very complex. When and how will the uranium be given, how will the mines be removed from Hormuz, when will Iran’s outstanding money be received, how will the compensation for war losses be paid… there are many such issues which will have to be discussed in great detail to reach a consensus. History has also been similar. In the previous deal made between the two countries, it was not about months but years.

Iran deal signed, now America will give VIP pass to these ships in Hormuz and will recover money in return

How long did it take for Iran’s nuclear deal to be signed?

The nuclear deal between Iran and America was signed in 2015, but talks on it were going on since 2013. The agreement reached was implemented in January 2016. This entire agreement was named Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). However, this agreement came to be known as Iran Nuclear Deal. At the time of the deal, America’s President was Barack Obama and Iran’s President was Hassan Rouhani. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was also alive then. Another interesting thing about that deal was that America and Iran were not the only signatories. China, Russia, France, UK and Germany also jointly signed that draft. However, Israel and Saudi were unhappy with that deal. But despite the two poles of world power signing the deal together, that deal could not go through.

Why did Iran’s nuclear deal end?

The Iran nuclear deal was made for 10 years, but it could not last. The Democrats lost power in America and the Republicans returned with Trump’s name. Donald Trump withdrew America from this agreement in 2018. Trump gave the reason that Iran was not successful in reducing its missile program and regional influence, hence such a step was taken. That means the efforts of P5+1 group have gone waste. Iran also started ignoring the restrictions imposed on its nuclear program.

There was a change of power in America and Joe Biden was elected as the Democratic President. The situation remained tense between the two countries. Efforts were made to bring the JCPOA agreements back on track but they failed. Biden’s envoys also kept talking to Iran but no result could be achieved. Hamas’ attack on Israel in October 2023 changed the entire equation. A fierce war started and Iran stood boldly against Israel and America regarding Gaza and Palestine. Biden tried to stop this war but no concrete solution could be found. But when Trump returned in 2024, America became aggressive towards Iran. Trump openly challenged Khamenei, stop the nuclear program or else we will attack. In June 2025, when one side was waiting to come to the negotiation table, Iran was attacked. The talks were postponed and the round of threats continued. On the night of 28 February 2026, America and Israel together did what Iran probably had not even thought of. By directly targeting Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, he was eliminated and thus a fierce war broke out between the two countries. Ultimately, after efforts by global powers, Trump signed the deal in France on June 17, 2026. Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has signed as mediator. Iran has also signed, but long discussions will take place between the two countries to reach agreement on many points. Now it remains to be seen how much time will Iran and America take to reach a conclusion after this.
