On Monday, the rebel camp led by opposition leader Ritabrata Banerjee announced a new leadership structure for the TMC, with veteran MLA Arup Roy replacing Mamata Banerjee as the chairperson. Mamata Banerjee started Trinamool after leaving Congress in 1998 and was its leader since then.

The rebels also launched a 30-member National Working Committee (NWC), and said they wanted the former West Bengal chief minister to become their “mentor”.

Ritabrata Banerjee later said that Arup Roy has been elected as the new chairman of Trinamool “with everyone’s consent”. Former minister Arup Biswas and MLA Firhad Hakim have been made vice-chairpersons. Today a special session of All India Trinamool Congress was held here.

Ritabrata Banerjee further said that district presidents and district committees will also be formed in the coming days. Rebel leaders claim that at least 60 out of 80 TMC MLAs have their support. Of the party’s 28 Lok Sabha MPs, 20 have already defected and merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India, which had contested the 2023 elections in neighboring Tripura but could not even open its account.
