Today, whenever we talk about the most popular serials of Indian television, the names of ‘Ramayana’ and ‘Mahabharata’ come up first. Both these serials not only broke TRP records but also made a place in the hearts of the audience. Especially Ramanand Sagar’s ‘Ramayana’ made Arun Govil and Deepika Chikhalia recognized as Lord Ram and Mother Sita in every household. But very few people know that even before ‘Ramayana’, this pair was seen together in such a famous serial.

We are talking about Doordarshan’s popular show ‘Vikram Aur Betal’. This serial, which was telecast in the 80s, is counted among the most popular fantasy shows in the history of Indian television. Based on the stories of King Vikramaditya and Betal, this serial had made everyone crazy from children to adults. Even today, when old and memorable TV shows are mentioned, the name of ‘Vikram Aur Betal’ is definitely taken.

The format of the show was amazing

The story of ‘Vikram and Betal’ was considered far ahead of its time. In every episode, King Vikramaditya would try to capture Betal and on the way, Betal would tell him a new story. At the end of the story he would ask a question which was necessary for the king to answer. If the king replied, the betel would then fly away and return to the tree. This interesting format forced the audience to wait for the new episode every week.
