Tejashwi took revenge of 3 months old! How did Congress lose the Rajya Sabha elections in Jharkhand despite having 56 MLAs?

June 18, 2026 by Uma Shankar

India alliance has suffered a major setback in the Rajya Sabha elections of Jharkhand. Despite having a fixed number of MLAs, Congress candidate Pranab Jha has lost the election. Bharatiya Janata Party supported independent candidate Parimal Nathwani has won the election. Nathwani has got the required 28 votes for victory. Whereas Pranab Jha of Congress has got 20 votes. Vaijnath Ram of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha has also won. Ram has got 30 votes.

Rajya Sabha in Jharkhand Elections were held on Thursday (June 18) for 2 seats. In the election, two candidates from India Alliance and NDA supported Parimal Nathwani were in the fray. To win one Rajya Sabha seat, 28 MLAs were needed. India Alliance has 56 MLAs. Despite this, one candidate of the alliance has faced defeat.

How did the game play out in the Rajya Sabha elections?

There are total 81 assembly seats in Jharkhand. Of these, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha has 34 MLAs. Congress has 16 MLAs. Apart from this, Rashtriya Janata Dal has 4 MLAs and ML has 2 MLAs. In the opposition, BJP has the maximum of 21 MLAs. In the assembly, there is one MLA each from JDU, LJP and AJSU. JLKM’s Jairam Mahato also reached the House after winning the 2024 assembly elections.

The government includes JMM, Congress, RJD and MLA. That means all four parties have a total of 56 MLAs in the assembly. In such a situation the question arises that then how did the game happen?

1. JMM has a total of 34 MLAs. JMM candidate Vaijnath Ram has got 30 votes. Ram needed only 28 votes to win. Despite this, to secure the seat, the party got two more MLAs to vote for Ram. Pranab Jha is said to have got the votes of 16 Congress MLAs and 4 JMM MLAs.

2. All the opposition MLAs remained united in supporting Nathwani for the second seat. He also got the support of Jairam Mahato. That means a total of 25 votes were already in favor of Nathwani. He needed only 3 votes to win, but Nathwani was successful in garnering 5 votes. According to Congress in-charge K Raju, RJD and MLA cheated.

3. According to the discussion so far, the MLAs of Rashtriya Janata Dal and Male have done cross voting. Nathwani has got a total of 5 more votes, out of which 2 votes were cancelled. There is also information that one vote received by Pranab Jha has been cancelled.

4. JMM’s National General Secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya has said that he will not officially say anything regarding this. Bhattacharya said that we will first talk with our leader. Then we will say something on this.

5. After voting, Bhola Yadav, who was made RJD’s observer, told reporters in Ranchi – The MLAs have voted as per the instructions of the high command. Yadav did not tell what the instructions of the high command were.

It is being said that in the Rajya Sabha elections held in April this year in Bihar, RJD candidate Amarendra Singh had to face defeat due to Congress MLAs. RJD has taken revenge for this in Jharkhand.
