Tamil Nadu government will give gold rings to these 5 lakh children every year, will spend Rs 700 crore

June 24, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK chief Vijay has announced a unique gift to the people of the state on the occasion of his birthday. After this announcement, it is being discussed not only in Tamil Nadu but in the entire country. The reason is that this scheme is directly related to newborn children and their families. Chief Minister Vijay has announced the launch of ‘Thai Maman Gold Ring Scheme’, under which children born in government hospitals will be given a gold ring of one gram as a gift.

The government claims that this is not just a welfare scheme but also an emotional step related to Tamil culture and traditions. At the same time, after this announcement a new debate has also started. Many people believe that when a gold ring will be received when children are born in a government hospital, then a large number of families will turn to government hospitals instead of private hospitals. In such a situation, the question is arising whether this scheme can become a challenge for private hospitals? And how many children are born every year in government hospitals in Tamil Nadu, who will be affected by this scheme?

What is ‘Thai Maman Gold Ring Scheme’?

The scheme announced by Vijay on 22 June 2026 is closely related to a tradition of Tamil society. This scheme is inspired by ‘Thai Maman Seer’, in this tradition the maternal uncle of the child gives him a gift after birth. This gift is considered a symbol of the child’s safety, prosperity and family affection. The government has adopted this cultural tradition in the form of a scheme. Now the state government will also play the role of maternal uncle to the newborn children and will give them a special gift at the beginning of their life. The official launch of the scheme will take place on 15 September 2026, the birth anniversary of Peregrine Anna. However, its benefit will be available to all the children born in government hospitals from Vijay’s date of birth i.e. 22 June 2026.

Who will get the benefit of the scheme?

  • Every child born in a government hospital on or after June 22, 2026 will be eligible.
  • The newborn will be given a 1 gram gold ring.
  • The ring will be provided free of cost by the government.
  • The scheme will be applicable to all government hospitals and government health institutions in the state.

Complete details of the scheme?

How many children are born in government hospitals every year?

Based on reports, it is said that every year about 4 lakh children are born in government hospitals in Tamil Nadu. If this number continues in the future, the government will have to give gold rings to about 4 lakh newborns every year. The state government has set a budget of crores of rupees every year for this scheme of giving gold rings to newborn children. The biggest impact of this scheme can be seen in the health sector, the number of people in government hospitals can increase as compared to private hospitals.

What will this gold ring be like?

According to the scheme, every eligible newborn will be given a 1 gram gold ring. If we look at the current market rates, the price of 1 gram of gold of 22 carat is around Rs 13,600, while that of 24 carat remains between Rs 14,280. The rate of 18 carat is Rs 11,170. Fluctuations in price are possible, but broadly speaking, the government may have to spend hundreds of crores of rupees every year on this scheme. A budget of Rs 756 crore has also been fixed by the government for this scheme. However, the actual expenditure will depend on the government’s procurement process and the market price of gold. If the rate of gold increases rapidly in the coming time, the budget may also have to be increased.

Will there be a crisis on private hospitals?

Many families choose between government and private hospitals for delivery. Now if the child gets a gold ring after delivery in a government hospital, then economically weak and middle class families can give priority to government hospitals. However, it is too early to say that there will be a major crisis on private hospitals, but some impact can definitely be seen. However, it can also be said that as competition increases, private hospitals may have to offer new packages or facilities. Apart from this scheme, there are many benefits of going to a government hospital, which include things like low cost of delivery, benefits of government health schemes. On the other hand, government hospitals in Tamil Nadu are already counted among the best public health infrastructure in the country.
