June 24, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Negotiations have intensified towards finalizing the proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) between India and America. In this sequence, United States Trade Representative Ambassador Jameson Greer visited New Delhi with the American delegation from 22 to 24 June 2026. The objective of this visit was to pursue a balanced and mutually beneficial trade agreement between the two countries.

Several rounds of discussion took place on BTA

During the visit, Ambassador Greer held several rounds of detailed meetings with Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. Major issues related to bilateral trade agreements were discussed in these meetings. During the talks, special emphasis was laid on topics like increasing market access, strengthening digital trade, making supply chains more reliable, reducing non-tariff barriers and increasing cooperation in strategic sectors.

Efforts to finalize the interim agreement soon

Both sides appreciated the progress achieved by the negotiating teams in recent months. Also, the positive momentum created by frequent technical and ministerial level meetings was welcomed. The main focus of the discussion was the early finalization of an interim trade agreement, which is considered an important step towards a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement. Both countries agreed that the agreement should be one that is balanced, commercially meaningful and beneficial to businessmen, farmers, workers and consumers of both the countries.

Emphasis on further strengthening economic partnership

India and America acknowledged the growing importance of their economic partnership amid the changing global business environment. Both sides reiterated the common goal of increasing bilateral trade, encouraging innovation and developing strong and reliable supply chains. At the end of the meeting, both the countries expressed confidence that the ongoing talks will give new strength to economic relations and the India-US comprehensive global strategic partnership will deepen in the future.
