Surender Sharma on Competition: Famous comic poet Surendra Sharma has seen the era when great writers like Shail Chaturvedi, Kaka Hathrasi and Sharad Joshi used to grace the stages and conferences. His mere presence broadened the stage and added to the glamor of the ceremony. But in today’s times, there are neither such writers nor such gatherings. Recently, during a conversation in TV9 Bharatvarsh’s special podcast ‘Na Kahun Se Bair’, Surendra Sharma remembered the golden era of the old Kavi Sammelan and also expressed his opinion on his comparison with the writers of today’s era.
How were the earlier poetry conferences?
Talking about earlier Kavi Sammelans, Surendra Sharma said, ‘That period was something different. There were many people who read poetry and were equally good listeners. In those times the conferences used to be full of alcohol and poetry. Now Kavi Sammelans have become poetry free and alcohol free. This was the case earlier. They used to carry it regularly on stage in a thermos. Used to get steel glasses and drink from them. There are few public idiots who would not understand. But the program continued till 5 in the morning. Payment is the same Rs 500 or Rs 600. This is not the case in forums today. Everything is there but poetry itself has disappeared.

What did Surendra Sharma say on competition from youth?
Surendra Sharma was asked that there are many children of quarter of your age whose popularity in the country is at its peak. So a feeling of some kind of competition must have come to mind. Responding to this, Surendra Sharma ji said – No, it is not so, what difference does it make? At one time I also used to take more money from Neeraj ji. Where is the competition between me and them? If you see today, there are many stand up comedians who also use abusive language. Do everything. I don’t see. That’s why I stopped watching movies. Haven’t seen any movie for last 25 years. I know that abuses will continue.
