
The Central Government has adopted a positive stance on various important issues related to sugarcane and onion producing farmers of Maharashtra. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that in the detailed meeting held with Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, many major demands of the farmers and cooperative sector have been agreed upon and soon the Central Government can take important decisions.
Maharashtra Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar were present in the meeting held by the Ministry of Cooperation regarding the problems of farmers. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, consumers in the meeting with him And along with Public Distribution Minister Prahlad Joshi, many ministers of Maharashtra Government, public representatives and representatives of cooperative institutions were present.
After the meeting, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said that issues related to the sugar industry were specifically discussed in the meeting. The Central Government recognized the need to increase the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of sugar. Apart from this, assurance has also been given to take a decision on increasing the ethanol quota in the next two months. Positive agreement has also been reached on debt restructuring of sugar mills and payment of interest subvention.
Big decisions of the Center for sugar industry and sugarcane farmers
In the meeting with the Central Government, important issues of onion producing farmers of the state were also discussed. In today’s meeting, the demand of NAFED and NCCF to purchase onions directly from farmers has been approved. Instead of the procurement done till now at the trader level, arrangements will now be made for direct procurement from farmers.
Apart from this, there was also positive discussion on the proposal to purchase 10 lakh tonnes of onion instead of 2 lakh tonnes. Due to large-scale export of onion seeds, the domestic market is being affected, hence the Center has also accepted the demand of imposing heavy export surcharge on onion seed export.
After the meeting, it was told by the Maharashtra government that recently the onion purchase price has been increased to Rs 15.80 per kg and it is also being considered to increase it further. Also, the Central Government clarified that there is no ban on export of onion.
Discussion on transparency in grading and insurance of Hapus mangoes
Farmers used to complain that in the name of grading in NAFED and NCCF, the goods are refused to be purchased by saying that they are of poor quality. Now grading will be done through machines, which will provide justice to the farmers.
The problems of Hapus mango growers were also discussed in the meeting. Maharashtra government submitted a memorandum to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan demanding changes in the difficult rules imposed by insurance companies. On this, the Union Minister has assured to find a solution by holding a meeting with the insurance companies.
