Studied from DU, became ASG in 2014… Know who is Justice Narasimha, who joined the Supreme Court Collegium

With the retirement of Justice JK Maheshwari on Sunday, Justice PS Narasimha will become a member of the Supreme Court Collegium. Being the fifth senior most judge, Justice Narasimha will officially be part of the collegium till his retirement on May 2, 2028. Justice Maheshwari has retired after a tenure of about five years. There has been a change in the collegium after his retirement. Let us know who is Justice PS Narasimha.

First of all, talking about the new collegium, the new collegium will now include Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice BV Nagarathna, Justice MM Sundaresh and Justice PS Narasimha. The collegium system came into existence after a decision of the Supreme Court in 1993. Under this, the five top judges of the Supreme Court recommend the appointment, transfer and promotion of judges in the Supreme Court and 25 High Courts.

Government may return recommendation

Under this arrangement, the government can send back the recommendation of the collegium. However, when the collegium sends the recommendation again, the government usually accepts it. But such cases have also come to light, when the government sent the file back or did not respond to the recommendation.

Who is Justice Narasimha?

Now let’s talk about Justice Narasimha. He was born on 3 May 1963 in Hyderabad. He graduated in Economics, Political Science and Public Administration from Nizam College, Hyderabad. After this, in the year 1988, he studied law from the Campus Law Center of Delhi University. In the same year he got himself registered as a lawyer. He initially practiced law in the lower courts, tribunals and high courts of Hyderabad. After this he came to the Supreme Court and practiced here.

Appointed Additional Solicitor General in 2014

Justice Narasimha was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Full Court of the Supreme Court in 2008. He argued in many public law cases related to constitutional, administrative and environmental issues. Apart from this, he was appointed Additional Solicitor General of India in 2014. During this time, he assisted the court as a law officer in many important cases, including the NJAC case before the Constitution Bench. He was also part of the Supreme Court delegation to the Supreme Court of Canada, where he presented a paper on extradition and environment. Justice Narasimha was appointed Supreme Court judge directly from the bar on 31 August 2021.
