In the process of digitization of Waqf properties, a big campaign of cleanliness is going on in Uttar Pradesh and due to this, registrations are being canceled continuously. Till now, registration of more than 31 thousand Waqf properties has been canceled on ‘Umeed’ portal. Information has been received from sources that during the investigation, many flaws have been found in the documents of these Waqf properties.
Out of 1,18,302 properties registered on the ‘Umeed’ portal, registration of 31,328 properties has been cancelled. These may also include properties of many old cemeteries and dargahs. The process of registering Waqf properties is going on on the ‘Umeed’ portal launched by the Ministry of Minority Affairs on June 5 last year.
Till now 53 thousand properties have been approved
Initially time was given for 6 months. But on the appeal of Uttar Pradesh Sunni and Shia Central Waqf Board, the Waqf Tribunal had extended the time for registration for another 6 months. This additional time is ending on June 5 next month. Only more than 53 thousand properties have been approved.
So far, out of the total 1,18,302 properties registered on the portal, only 53,711 have been approved, while the verification of documents of 20,546 properties is in the final stage. The most shocking thing is that the Waqf claims of 31,192 properties have been completely canceled. Many cemeteries and shrines among the properties that have been canceled are in danger.
What is the reason for cancellation of registration?
Many types of problems arise in canceled cases. Like Khasra number not matching between Waqf Board and revenue records. There is a huge difference in area. Registration of the same property in two different Waqf boards. Apart from this, there are technical errors and many old mistakes in the documents.
Maximum number of registrations have been canceled in many districts of the state. Most of these have been canceled in Jaunpur. After this comes Barabanki, Muzaffarnagar, Aligarh, Basti, and Sitapur. While registration of 1,938 properties has been canceled in Jaunpur, registration of 1521 properties in Barabanki, 1510 in Muzaffarnagar, 1061 in Aligarh, 1000 in Basti, 908 in Unnao, 906 in Sitapur, 891 in Hardoi, 886 in Azamgarh and 875 in Lucknow have been cancelled.
what is the next option
This problem has emerged most in districts like Jaunpur, Barabanki and Muzaffarnagar. According to the rules, there is a limited provision for extending the time limit. Despite the Supreme Court’s stay provisions, the tribunal has already given maximum time. Now mutawallis will have to approach the tribunal in person, which is a legally complex and time-consuming process.
However, Waqf Board officials also say that the mutawallis still have time till June 5. They can upload the property again with correct documents. If the deficiencies are not rectified within this period, the concerned properties will be removed from the portal.
In Uttar Pradesh, more than 1.26 lakh Waqf institutions come under the UP Sunni Waqf Board. This entire process is being conducted through the “Umeed” portal of the central government, which was launched in June 2025 with the aim of creating digital records of Waqf properties and bringing transparency in their management. Registration on this portal has been made mandatory under the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, which came into force on April 5.
