‘Sting is more dangerous than alcohol’! BJP MLA Vikram Pachpute speaks on sting ban

July 3, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Keeping in mind the safety of children in Maharashtra, the sale of Sting has been banned within 500 meters of schools. The state government has taken this step after concerns were raised regarding some elements present in the beverage, which are considered bad for the health of children. Food and Drug Administration Minister Narhari Jirwal said that this decision has been taken in view of concerns regarding the effect of energy drinks on school children. Maharashtra BJP MLA Vikram Pachpute has welcomed this decision of the government.

In fact, he had raised a question regarding this in the Assembly. In an interview to ANI, he said, ‘During today’s session I raised a question about ‘Sting’ energy drink. This drink is easily available everywhere in India and especially in Maharashtra. The company itself says and it is clearly written on the label that this drink is not suitable for children. Still ‘Sting’ is being sold to them. Therefore, my main concern was that the government should make such rules that the sale of this product to children can be stopped immediately. The most worrying thing is that the consumption of this product among teenagers is increasing day by day, due to which their addiction is also increasing. In future, this addiction can also lead to drugs and other wrong directions.

Sting contains high amount of caffeine

The BJP MLA said, ‘My main objection was that it contains high amount of caffeine. One can contains about 32 mg of caffeine. The maximum limit of caffeine for adults is 400 mg per day. Apart from this, it also contains Taurine. The amount of sugar in this drink is about 34 percent. Caffeine speeds up the heartbeat, while taurine acts as a stabilizer in the body. After drinking it, one feels energy for some time, but after some time one feels tired in the body, due to which the person wishes to drink it again.

Energy drinks can increase the risk of heart attack

Vikram Pachpute further said, ‘Experts also advise that one should not consume more than two energy drinks in a day. This drink does not directly cause death, but it can increase the risk of heart attack. Today, problems like diabetes are also increasing rapidly in young children.

‘Sting is more dangerous than alcohol’

He said, ‘In response to my question, the concerned minister has said that now the sale of such energy drinks will be banned within 500 meters of schools and action will be taken against those who violate the rules. I commend the Commissioner for this decision, but it will also be important to see whether it is implemented effectively or not. I believe that such energy drinks should not be sold to children under any circumstances, but currently this rule is not being followed. I would demand the government to take more stringent steps on this issue. My personal opinion is that the sting is more dangerous than the alcohol.
