Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on hunger strike at Jantar Mantar for the last 20 days demanding the resignation of the Education Minister in the NEET paper leak case, was shifted by the police to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday morning, although she refused to end the hunger strike. Have refused. A statement issued by Safdarjung Hospital said that Sonam Wangchuk refused to take IV fluids, ORS and blood sugar is 78 mg/dl and she is conscious.
In the health bulletin issued by the hospital, it has been said that Sonam Wangchuk Was admitted to VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital on 18/7/2026 at 7:40 am after being brought by Delhi Police. He was admitted due to not eating solid food for 20 days and general weakness. “
Sonam Wangchuk’s blood sugar 78 mg/dl
The statement said that he was conscious upon reaching the hospital and his pulse, blood pressure and oxygen level were stable. However, symptoms of dehydration i.e. lack of water were found in the body. Blood tests found low potassium levels and indicated acid-base imbalance in the body.
His blood sugar was 78 mg/dl. The level of ketones in urine test was 1+ at the time of admission, which increased to 3+ by 1 pm. Doctors advised him to take IV fluids, ORS and medicines, but he refused to take all of them. He is being constantly monitored in the hospital and doctors are advising him to get treatment.
No treatment should be done without consent… wife’s demand
On the other hand, Wangchuk’s wife Geetanjali J Angmo said that he has been shifted to Safdarjung Hospital, and insisted that the activist should not be given any medical treatment without his consent. Angmo said, “He is in Safdarjung Hospital. I refuse to give him anything without my consent. No treatment should start without my consent. If anything happens, I hold everyone responsible.”
He said doctors told the family that Wangchuk’s potassium level had dropped to 2.9 from 4.3 a day earlier, but alleged that they refused to provide a copy of the medical report despite repeated requests.
He said, “Yesterday, doctors at Safdarjung had checked him and all vitals were normal. Potassium was 4.3. Now they are saying potassium is 2.9 and it is fatal, but when we asked for the report, they are showing us the report but not giving it. Due to lack of transparency, I am having a trust problem.”
Wangchuk’s wife demands fair investigation
Angmo said the family wanted an independent medical examination before any treatment was approved. He said, “I have asked them not to give potassium… We are going to do another test from a different lab before giving the medicine. Sonam is absolutely fine and we will soon shift her to a hospital we trust.”
In two letters to the medical superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, Angmo asked that Wangchuk not be given any oral or intravenous medicines or fluids without his approval and sought copies of all medical reports.
