Malaysia has implemented a new rule from Monday. Now children below 16 years of age will not be able to create social media accounts. Age verification will have to be done before using all the big platforms like social media, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube etc. It is important to prevent children under 16 years of age from creating accounts. Companies breaking these rules of the government can also be fined up to Rs 25 lakh. According to this new rule, if children somehow create an account, their parents will not be punished.
What is the purpose of this decision?
This decision has been taken by the government to keep children below 16 years of age away from social media. The aim of the government is to protect children from bad content, cyber bullying and the habits of spending too much time online. The government says that we are not completely stopping children from the Internet, but want to keep them safe. Social media platforms will now have to create such facilities that protect children from things that are harmful. They were also given some time to implement this rule.
Australia became the first country
Due to the content coming on social media, the mental development of children below 16 years of age is affected in many ways. In such a situation, Australia, the first country in the world to distance children from access to social media, took this decision. Here, the use of social media by children below 16 years of age was banned from December 10, 2025. In Australia, all the accounts of children of this age on social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok were closed. Apart from this, the same strictness has been taken for 16 year old children in Brazil and Indonesia also.
What is the warning given by Meta?
Meta says that with this decision taken by Malaysia and other countries, children can leave safe apps and create their accounts elsewhere. Meta has expressed the possibility that it may happen that children will not leave social media platforms completely and may use the platform without control. In such a situation, their chances of facing online threats will increase instead of decreasing.
