Smartphones became expensive by 7.9% in 5 months, will there be relief from the government’s decision now?

July 16, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Gradually, most of the mobile manufacturing companies are increasing the rates of phones, which has ruined the entire budget of the common people for buying a new phone. In such a situation, market research firm TechArk has conducted a study, this study has revealed that how expensive have mobile phones become on an average in the first five months of 2026? According to this study, after prices remained largely stable in the Indian smartphone market for a year, the average price of a handset has increased by 7.9 percent between January 2026 and May 2026.

Will a government decision give you relief?

On Wednesday (July 15), the government announced MPMS i.e. mobile Phone Manufacturing scheme has been approved. An amount of Rs 62 thousand 500 crore will be spent under this scheme and this scheme will be implemented for the next five years. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has said that under this scheme, companies will be given incentives on the basis of local level Research and Development (R&D) and purchase of parts (domestic sourcing) in India. Not only this, separate incentives will also be available for increasing smartphone exports. Due to the government’s decision, it now seems that the rising prices will be controlled and the general public will get relief from this.

The objective of the government behind this scheme is that the government wants that as long as this scheme is running, mobile phones worth Rs 39 lakh crore should be produced during this period. Let us remind you that under the earlier implemented PLI scheme, production worth Rs 22 lakh crore was seen. This time the government wants local production of higher value than the previous period. The government has taken an important step by giving incentives to companies under this scheme and now with this step of the government it is expected that the rising prices of mobile phones will be controlled.

What came out in the study?

Outlook Business reports that the study tracked monthly retail prices of 165 smartphone models from 22 brands launched in 2025 and found that there was little change in prices last year before rising sharply in 2026. It has been revealed that the biggest increase in prices has been seen in the budget segment and lower mid-range devices.

Faisal Kawoosa, chief analyst and co-founder of TechArk, said, 2025 was the year of discounts. Buyers who waited were rewarded with stable or falling phone prices. Whereas 2026 has completely changed it.
