June 18, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Indian captain Shubman Gill scored a brilliant century in the second ODI against Afghanistan. He faced 110 balls and scored 154 runs, which included 22 fours and 2 sixes. But even after playing this innings, Gill could not break the record which has remained intact in Indian cricket for 15 years. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma also tried. Once Rohit even came very close to breaking it. But this did not happen.

Virender Sehwag’s record remains intact for 15 years

Now you might be wondering what that record is all about? related to that record Virender Sehwag Is from. 15 years ago i.e. in 2011, he had played that unmatched inning of 219 runs, hitting fours and sixes, against the West Indies at the Holkar Stadium in Indore, which was the biggest inning by an Indian as a captain. Earlier this record was in the name of Sachin Tendulkar, who as captain had scored unbeaten 186 runs against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 1999.

Rohit Sharma came close to the record in 2017

In the year 2017, Rohit Sharma came very close to breaking Virender Sehwag’s record. Then as captain, he played an unbeaten inning of 208 runs in the ODI match played against Sri Lanka in Mohali. In the year 2018, as captain, Virat Kohli crossed 150 runs twice but remained far away from Virender Sehwag’s record. Then he played an unbeaten inning of 157 runs against West Indies in Vizag and remained unbeaten after scoring 160 runs against South Africa in Cape Town.

Gill could not overtake even Virat and Rohit

Now in the second ODI against Afghanistan, Shubman Gill scored 154 runs, which is his biggest innings as a captain, but with this, he has not been able to surpass even the record of Virender Sehwag, let alone Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma.
