
The West Bengal government has started an initiative to collect updated data of all the Madrasa educational institutions in the state. The Government’s Minority Affairs and Madrassa Education Department has issued an important instruction in this regard on June 5, 2026. Under the instructions, all the District Magistrates have been asked to collect information related to madrassas by conducting surveys at the block and municipal body level in their respective districts. The government says that this step is only for gathering and verification of information.
According to the information, the department has instructed all the district magistrates of the state to conduct a survey at the block and municipal level and prepare compiled data of all the madrassa institutions in the district. This includes recognised, registered, government aided, unaided, unregistered, community run and private madrassas. Its objective is to assess the actual and updated status of madrasas running in the state.
What information will be included
Under the survey, infrastructure facilities of institutions, curriculum, number of students, administrative arrangements, child welfare activities and other relevant information will be collected. The government wants an accurate picture of the current status of Madrasa education to be revealed so that concrete data is available while making policies in the future. The government believes that on the basis of this data, education and welfare schemes can be made more effective in future.
No action will be taken against any institution right now
No action will be taken like transferring students. The concerned institutions will be able to continue their normal educational activities as before. The department has said that the purpose of data collection is only to update the records and understand the status of the institutions.
Places will be able to continue educational activities
The government has clearly said that this step is only for data collection and verification. The government has said that on the basis of this instruction, at present no action will be taken like closing any institute, taking strict action or transferring students. All madrassas will be able to continue their educational activities as before.
Report will have to be given by July 5
All the districts have been instructed to submit the report prepared after the survey to the state government by July 5, 2026. Officials will collect information from block and municipality level and compile it at the district level. After this, after analyzing the data received, a comprehensive assessment of the status of Madrasa education in the state will be made. It is believed that this data will help the government to understand the needs and shortcomings of madrassas.
