In Maharashtra, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has terminated the membership of AIMIM corporator Roshan Shaikh, elected from Ward 138 of Govandi. This action was taken after his OBC caste certificate was declared invalid by the Caste Verification Committee. According to the notification issued, Parbhani District Caste Certificate Verification Committee declared Roshan Shaikh’s OBC caste certificate invalid on 27 April 2026. This certificate was issued in November 2025.
Roshan Shaikh had obtained the post of corporator by winning the election from OBC reserved seat in the 2026 BMC elections. But, after the caste certificate became invalid, BMC itself terminated his membership under Section 16(1C)(a) of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888.
Hearing was to be held on July 27
According to the BMC notification, her corporator membership will be considered terminated from April 27, 2026, because on this day the Caste Verification Committee had given its decision. With the disqualification of Ward No. 138 corporator Roshan Shaikh, the number of AIMIM in BMC may reduce to 6. Roshan’s husband Irfan Shaikh said, “We have approached the Bombay High Court. The hearing has been fixed for July 27. But in the meantime, the BMC has disqualified her. I don’t know what was the hurry.”
An AIMIM member said, appeals in both the disqualification cases are pending in the ‘Small Causes Court’ and the Bombay High Court. We hope that the court’s decision will be in our favor and he will remain a corporator. There is no impact on the party as of now because we have enough members to represent us in the Standing Committee. But if the court’s decision comes against these two corporators, then the number of our members may reduce and we may have to face difficulties in the ward committee.
An experienced corporator said that if a corporator is disqualified, the candidate with the second highest number of votes can be declared elected by the court, provided that candidate approaches the court.
