DK’s political journey is 4 decades old
DK Shivkumar’s political career is almost four decades old. If we talk about his political journey, he started his political career as a student leader and today is one of the biggest and strongest leaders of Congress in Karnataka. DK’s family was already in politics. At the age of 18, he himself joined the Congress student organization NSUI.
Between 1981 and 1983, he became the District President of NSUI in Bengaluru. While studying at RC College, Bengaluru, he joined the Youth Congress and became the General Secretary of Karnataka State. At the age of 23, he contested his first assembly election from Sathanur seat.
At that time his competition was with the big leader of that time HD Deve Gowda.
DK became MLA for the first time in 1989
Although Shivakumar lost this election, his strong performance impressed everyone. DK got its first victory in 1987. He won the District Panchayat elections from Sathanur area. Became MLA in 1989. He won the assembly elections for the first time on Congress ticket from Sathanur seat and reached the assembly as an MLA for the first time.

Shivkumar emerged rapidly in the 90s
In the early 1990s, Dake rose rapidly in Karnataka politics. He helped form the Bangarappa government and went to jail. At that time he was one of the youngest ministers of the government. There was rebellion from the party in 1994. Congress did not give him ticket. Despite this, he contested the elections as an independent and the most important thing is that he also won the elections.
He won several consecutive elections from Sathanur and Kanakapura seats. Due to the special nature of former Chief Minister SM Krishna, he got the responsibility of many big ministries like electricity and urban development. After this he started being considered a great leader and strategist.

He won several consecutive elections from Sathanur and later from Kanakapura. After this, in the next few years, he emerged as the most trusted leader of Congress in Karnataka. His influence was much wider than electoral politics. He was often entrusted with many important political responsibilities. Thus he started playing the role of a manager in the party. From strategy to win the elections to uniting the party MLAs in times of crisis, he was also entrusted with the work. DK started playing the role of troubleshooter in the party.

Raid, arrested and also went to jail
Played a big role in keeping Congress MLAs united during Gujarat Rajya Sabha elections in 2017. Income tax raids took place in 2017 and ED arrested him in a money laundering case in 2019. Due to this he also had to go behind the bars. After his release from jail, he became the President of Karnataka Congress in March 2020 and strengthened the party. In the year 2023, along with Siddaramaiah, he led Congress to a big victory in Karnataka. This is the reason why DK Shivakumar is considered the trouble-shooter of Congress in Karnataka.
