There was a controversy going on for many days regarding the animated film ‘Mahaprabhu Jagannath’ made on Lord Jagannath. Some religious organizations and the Odisha government had objected to the animated depiction of Lord Jagannath in the film and demanded a ban on its release. The matter reached the Supreme Court, where the court clearly said that art and creative expression cannot be banned merely on the basis of objections of some people.

The Supreme Court rejected the petition of the Odisha government, which sought to ban the release of the film by changing the order given earlier. A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and R Mahadevan said that animation is a creative art made for children and it cannot be stopped on the basis of such objections. The court said that art and creativity should be respected in the country.

During the hearing, the court said that if creative productions are banned on the basis of every religious sentiment, then in future it will not be possible to make films, serials and animations based on Ramayana, Mahabharata or Lord Ram, Krishna and other gods and goddesses. The court said that such petitions cannot become an obstacle to the freedom of art. The court said, if such objections are accepted, it will lead to a ban on any creative presentation based on Lord Ram, Krishna or other deities in future.

Animation film being made for children
If such sensitivity continues and people keep filing petitions, then we will have to say that there cannot be any constructive presentation on Hindu Gods and Goddesses. Then serials like Ramayana will also be stopped. Art and creativity have a place in the country. The court said that stories related to Gods and Goddesses have been presented in different mediums for generations. Animation is made keeping children in mind and should be viewed from that perspective. The court said that creative expression cannot be held hostage like this.
Why did the dispute happen?
The Odisha government and the Sri Jagannath Temple administration said that there were religious objections to some scenes and presentation of Lord Jagannath in the film. The government also said that the process of review in this regard is going on. However, the film has already received a certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Earlier, considering the religious traditions of Rath Yatra, the Supreme Court had given permission to release the film after July 28. Now the court has refused to impose a stay again and has made it clear that there is no legal obstacle in the release of the film. The court acknowledged that it is necessary to maintain a balance between religious faith and creative expression.
