Israel and Lebanon have once again agreed to implement ceasefire. Along with this, both the countries have decided to create some security zones inside Lebanon. Hezbollah fighters will not be allowed to live or carry out activities in these areas. This agreement was reached after the fourth round of talks mediated by America.
A joint statement issued after the talks said that the ceasefire will continue only when Hezbollah completely stops attacks and withdraws all its fighters from the area south of the Litani River. It is not yet clear how these security areas will be created. However, the agreement states that complete control of these areas will be in the hands of the Lebanese Army. The army will handle security arrangements there and ensure that Hezbollah has no presence.
Israel-Lebanon’s message to Iran
The joint statement said that these steps can help towards a lasting peace and security agreement between Israel and Lebanon in the future. Both countries also said that the future of Lebanon will be decided only by its own government and the government of Israel. No outside country or organization should interfere in this.
This statement is believed to be an indirect reference to Iran, because Iran is a major supporter of Hezbollah. Iran has previously said that Israeli attacks on Lebanon should stop. However, Hezbollah was not involved in this conversation.
Attacks continue despite ceasefire
Despite the agreement on ceasefire, the attacks have not stopped completely. At least six people were killed in southern Lebanon in Israeli drone strikes on Wednesday. According to Lebanese security officials, a car was also targeted south of Beirut.
On the other hand, Israel claimed that it stopped a suspicious air target sent by Hezbollah midway. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi has warned that if Israel attacks Beirut, Iran will give a strong response.
Trump had asked Netanyahu to stop the fighting
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said that during the fighting, he had called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and appealed to stop the war in Lebanon. Netanyahu said that there may be differences between him and Trump on some issues, but both have the same thinking regarding Iran.
