SBI Strike: Employees may go on strike, bank alerts customers

May 22, 2026 by Uma Shankar

State Bank of India, the country’s largest bank, on Friday advised customers to use other methods for transactions after the strike announced by the employees early next week. SBI has requested its more than 52 crore customers to use ATMs, customer service centers and give priority to the bank’s online banking services like YONO and UPI.

The bank said that efforts are on to provide “essential services” in more than 23,200 branches. This information was shared in a post on the bank’s handle on micro-blogging platform ‘X’.

When can the strike happen?

The bank said that the All India State Bank of India Staff Federation has given notice of a two-day strike starting from May 25. SBI’s post said, “We deeply regret any inconvenience caused. Employees have warned of a strike to press their demands, including adequate staff recruitment. If the strike takes place, SBI’s banking services across the country may be affected for about five days, as the fourth Saturday and Sunday preceding the strike falls.

What is the demand of the employees?

The organization has also demanded that the bank should stop outsourcing permanent jobs. They say that this increases the risk of data leakage, misuse, fraud and identity theft, which can weaken customer trust and the bank may have to face legal and reputation related problems. Another demand is related to the appointment of Workman Employee Director in the Board.

A day after the proposed strike ends, there will be a holiday in many states on May 27 on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. According to the AISBISF statement, the demands of the employees include recruitment of messengers and armed guards, as well as giving NPS employees the option to change the pension fund manager.
