July 22, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Sawan Month Significance: Sawan is the fifth month of the Hindi calendar. This month has been dedicated to Shiva devotion. Special worship of Lord Shiva is done in the month of Sawan. Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva has special significance in this month. This is the reason that in Sawan, Shiva devotees bring water from holy rivers in Kanwar and perform Jalabhishek of the Lord. There is a religious belief that in this month, if worship and Jalabhishek are performed as per rituals, Mahadev fulfills all the wishes.

According to Drik Panchang, this year Saavan is starting from 30th of July, which will continue till the full moon of Saavan month on 28th August. During the time of Sawan, huge crowd of devotees gather in Shiva temples. Everyone expresses their wishes to Lord Shiva by doing Jalabhishek. Sawan Mahadev is considered very dear, but why is it so and what is the secret hidden behind it? Let us know in detail.

Had consumed poison in Saavan

According to the legend, Mahadev protected the world from the terrible poison Kalakoot that came out of the churning of the ocean, in the month of Sawan itself. This was the holy month, when for the sake of protecting the universe, Mahadev drank poison and by holding it in his throat he was called Neelkanth, but after drinking the poison, the heat in Mahadev’s body started increasing, then to cool down that heat, the gods offered him water. Since then the tradition of Jalabhishek of Shiva started in Sawan. Since then, Lord Shiva loves monsoon and water very much.

It is the month of union of Mahadev and Mata Parvati.

After immolating herself in the yagya of King Daksh, Mother Sati took her second birth as Mother Parvati, daughter of the mountain king Himalaya. Mother Parvati had performed severe penance to attain Lord Shiva. According to the scriptures, in the month of Sawan itself, God heard the call of the mother and being pleased with her penance, Lord Shiva married her on Monday of the month of Sawan. This month is also the month of meeting of Mahadev and Mother Parvati, that is why this month is very dear to Mahadev.

Mahadev had come to his in-laws house in Saavan

It is believed that Lord Shiva incarnated on earth in the month of Sawan and went to his in-laws’ house and was given a grand welcome there. Jalabhishek was also performed. It is said that every year Lord Shiva comes to his in-laws’ house in the month of Saavan, hence he loves the month of Saavan very much.
