Sawan Custom: Do women keep fast without clothes in this village of Himachal during Sawan? Know what is the reason

July 20, 2026 by Uma Shankar

India is a confluence of many cultures and rare customs. Every village and area has its own unique characteristics. There are some customs which surprise everyone. One such incredible custom is in ‘Pini’ village located in Manikarna Valley of Himachal Pradesh, where the women have been observing a unique fast without clothes for centuries. There is enthusiasm among the local people about this fast and celebrate it like a festival.

Sawan fast is observed for 5 days

The women of this village observe this special fast every year in Sawan for only five days. Women do not wear clothes during fasting. The most important thing is that she does not leave the house for these five days. In complete solitude she neither meets anyone nor talks to anyone. However, due to modern times, there have been some minor changes in this practice. Nowadays, some women cover their bodies with thin woolen or silken clothes and observe the fast in solitude inside the house.

The story behind observing this fast

According to the belief of the local people, this village was ruled by cruel demons centuries ago. Those demons used to kidnap and kill married women dressed in beautiful clothes. Due to this the villagers got scared and they prayed to their patron goddess ‘Lahua Ghont’. The goddess came to the village and killed the demons. This ritual continues even today to commemorate that incident and to guarantee that no evil force will enter the village in the future.

There are strict rules for men also

During these five days, not only the women but also the men of the village have to follow strict rules. They cannot talk to their wives, cannot drink alcohol and completely abstain from meat. The special thing is that no person from outside the village is allowed to enter during these five days. Local people believe that this practice is a symbol of protecting the collective faith and tradition of the village.
