Why is Saavan dedicated to Lord Shiva?

The month of Sawan is related to Lord Shiva because of the churning of the ocean. According to the story described in the Puranas, the gods and demons together churned the ocean. Many gems came out from the churning of the ocean, but at the same time the ocean also released a deadly poison called Halahal. This poison had the ability to destroy the entire creation. Then the gods and demons prayed to Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva accepted the prayer and took the poison in his throat. Because of this his throat turned blue and he was called ‘Neelkanth’. Mythological belief is that this incident happened in the month of Sawan. Lord Shiva’s body temperature had increased due to the effect of poison. To reduce this heat, all the gods offered water on him. Only then did Mahadev’s body temperature come down. It is believed that for this reason water is offered to Lord Shiva in the month of Sawan.
