
After 16 months, a bilateral meeting took place between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump in Evian, France. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the ongoing G7 summit in Evian. Many issues including trade deal, West Asia were discussed between the two leaders. During this, PM Modi raised the issue of Indian security with Trump. He said that the safety of Indian sailors is very important.
Prime Minister Modi told US President Trump, “We have always believed that freedom of transport movement in the sea should be ensured and we should emphasize on this. Lakhs of Indian sailors work in the seas around the world in the field of maritime trade.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his meeting with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, said that the safety of Indian sailors working in the Strait of Hormuz area is of utmost importance for New Delhi.
Emphasis on keeping the Strait of Hormuz open
In the meeting between the two countries, PM Modi also stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, because it is very important for the global economy. PM Modi said, “India has always stressed the importance of freedom of navigation and we should work together on this issue.”
Meeting is important amid ongoing tension
Since the last meeting of PM Modi and Trump in February 2025, Trump has made several statements, including calling the Indian economy ‘dead’, which had strained relations between the two countries. During today’s meeting, he again took a U-turn from his statement and said that India is spending a lot of money in America.
Trump told reporters, “Modi is spending a lot of money in America, so we appreciate that. It’s creating jobs. I just want to say that he has been my friend for a long time and our relationship has always been very good.”
