The use of AI is increasing rapidly in Russia regarding soldiers killed or missing in the Russia-Ukraine war. Many Russian families are using AI to recreate photos and videos of their loved ones as if they have returned to the family. From July 2025, such AI videos have started appearing in large numbers on social media. In these, soldiers are shown embracing their families, returning home or coming to their loved ones from heaven.
In most videos, Russian soldiers are presented as heroes protecting the country and family. At the same time, there is usually no mention of the devastation or victims of the war in Ukraine. For this reason many Ukrainian people have criticized these videos.
Emotional messages are also being added
Russian blogger Katya Jin had made many such AI videos about her missing soldier husband. Later he also gave the facility to people to make such videos. People send photographs of themselves and their dead or missing relatives, after which AI creates fake but real-looking photographs and videos. Emotional messages and special scenes are also added to these.
In Russia, a woman named Anna Korableva also makes such farewell videos. He says that this gives people the feeling of seeing their loved ones for the last time or bidding farewell to them. Most of the requests he receives come from families of Russian soldiers killed in the Ukraine war.
Caution advised
However, experts are advising caution regarding this technology. According to Cambridge University researcher Katarzyna Nowachik-Basinska, it is not yet clear whether such AI videos reduce people’s suffering or increase it. He has described it as a big social and technological experiment.
The cost of making such videos in Russia ranges from 200 rubles to 10,000 rubles. Some AI creators are earning good money from this. For this reason, some people allege that the suffering of others is being made a source of income. According to BBC report, at least 2.25 lakh Russian soldiers have been confirmed dead in the Ukraine war, while the actual number is believed to be much higher.
