Russia becomes India’s shield in the oil game! Shopping record made in 1 month

July 12, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Iran has strait of hormuz The shutdown may have increased concerns about oil across the world, but India, along with Russia, has adopted a different strategy. India has made a record purchase of crude oil from Russia in June 2026. India’s import of Russian crude oil increased by 34% in June as compared to May. However, the interesting thing is that despite selling more oil, Russia’s oil earnings have decreased. This information has come out in the report of Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA).

According to the report, India purchased crude oil worth about 4.5 billion euros from Russia in June. Whereas India’s total fossil fuel import from Russia was 5.5 billion euros. About 83% of this was of crude oil only. With this purchase, India became the second largest country in the world to buy oil and other fossil fuels from Russia. China is at number one in this list. According to the report, India’s total crude oil imports also increased by 5.4% in June. Many big refineries of the country increased their oil purchases from Russia.

These companies increased exports

  • The supply of crude oil coming from Russia to Reliance Industries’ Jamnagar refinery increased by 150%.
  • Imports at Paradip Refinery of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) increased by 126%.
  • This increase in BPCL’s Kochi Refinery was 83%.
  • Oil purchase from Russia at Nayara Energy’s Vadinar Refinery increased by 45%.

India exported to countries

Russia definitely got the benefit of India’s increased purchases in terms of exports. Russia’s crude oil exports increased by 14% in June, but due to low oil prices in the international market, its earnings decreased by 8% to 348 million euros per day. The report also says that India is not only buying crude oil from Russia, but is also refining it and exporting it to many other countries. Refineries in India, Turkey, Brunei and Georgia also exported petroleum products made from Russian crude in June to countries that have imposed sanctions on Russia. These include countries like European Union (EU), America and Australia.
